Luis Gutierrez Fine Arts Scholarship
Opportunity Information
This scholarship opportunity is provided by Luis Gutierrez, a Mexican-American artist and retired art professor who taught at San Jose City College.
These scholarships will be awarded to students majoring in a Fine Arts program at San Jose City College who have been accepted into a 4-year undergraduate program in Fine Arts. For the purposes of this scholarship, “Fine Arts” is defined as Visual and Performing Arts and includes majors in Dance, Theater, Film, Music, Photography, Sculpture, Painting, Ceramics, Creative Writing, and Philosophy.
Qualifications
- Applicant’s cumulative GPA must be a 3.00 minimum.
- Applicant must have completed at least 60-degree applicable units by the end of the current Spring semester.
- Applicant must be a resident of Santa Clara County.
- Applicant must have been accepted into a 4-year university undergraduate program in Fine Arts. For the purposes of this scholarship, “Fine Arts” will include the following: Visual or Performing Arts, Dance, Theater, Film, Music, Photography, Sculpture, Painting, Ceramics, Creative Writing, or Philosophy.
Essay & Submission Requirements
- Provide a typed, double-spaced, one page statement addressing why you have chosen to study the field of Fine Arts (as defined in the eligibility requirements).
- Submit an electronic/digital copy of your artwork. This may include one of the following:
- Video and/or audio recordings of performances
- Technical theater, music and dance portfolio (lighting/set designs)
- Portfolio of 3-5 artworks showing range of techniques
- Sketchbooks demonstrating creative process
- Motion graphics or animation samples
- Portfolio of writing samples (poetry, short stories, essays)
- Interdisciplinary projects connecting philosophy to the arts
- Portfolio website or PDF showcasing projects

- By checking this box, you acknowledge that applicants awarded a scholarship will be required to attend an in-person award ceremony hosted on campus at San Jose City College. Attendance at the award ceremony will be mandatory for all scholarship recipients, unless the student has a class scheduled during the time of the ceremony or if the student has an extenuating circumstance. You also acknowledge that you will be required to submit a "Thank-You Letter" to the donor(s) providing the scholarship opportunity.
